How Buster Changed My Life Forever | The Story Behind Bark with Buster
How Buster Changed My Life Forever
Growing up in Hyderabad, India, dogs were often viewed very differently to how many Australians see them today. Rabies concerns, cultural stigma and long held beliefs around dogs created caution and fear from a young age.
But even as a child, Reza found himself fascinated by animals.
At around six or seven years old, while other kids played outside, he would quietly stand on the balcony of his family apartment watching the street dogs below. He studied them endlessly. Their behaviour, their relationships, their personalities.
There was Karpa, the alpha. Julie, his loyal companion. Karpa 2, their son.
Without fully understanding why, he felt connected to them.
The Boy Who Fed Street Dogs
As a child, Reza often worried about the street dogs he saw searching through rubbish for scraps of food. He noticed their hunger. Their survival instincts. The way they waited near garbage piles hoping for something to eat.
His mother would send him to the local shop to buy bread, but by the time he returned home the packet was often mysteriously half empty.
Reza had fed pieces to dogs he met along the way.
His mother would become exasperated, wondering what had happened to the bread while Reza quietly defended the hungry dogs outside. Looking back now, he jokes that her frustrated breathing became so dramatic he thought she had developed asthma.
Even then, compassion for animals was already deeply rooted within him.
Inspired by Nature
Reza became obsessed with animals and nature documentaries, spending hours watching Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and National Geographic.
David Attenborough became a huge source of inspiration.
He watched episodes repeatedly, even when his mother would laugh and remind him he had already seen them before.
There was something about animals that completely captivated him. Their intelligence. Their emotions. Their survival instincts. Their connection to humans and nature.
Long before Bark with Buster existed, the fascination was already there.
Meeting Buster
At around eleven years old, Reza met the dog that would quietly change his life forever.
Buster was his cousin's German Shepherd.
At first, Reza was cautious around him. Buster was enormous, powerful and intimidating. Years of fear and cultural conditioning do not disappear overnight.
But then something unexpected happened.
Buster chose gentleness.
He licked Reza's face. Gave him kisses. Sat calmly beside him.
And in that moment, something changed forever.
Reza realised how incredibly powerful dogs truly are. He understood that if Buster wanted to, he could easily overpower him.
But instead, Buster chose love. Loyalty. Trust.
That moment became one of the most important emotional memories of his life.
The first pat on Buster was more than touching a dog. It was the moment fear transformed into understanding.
Australia Became Home
In 2007, at 24 years old, Reza moved to Australia to study, leaving behind his parents, family and everything familiar in India.
The journey was not always easy.
Like many migrants starting from scratch, he lived hand to mouth at times and worked across multiple customer service roles while building a new life.
But through those experiences he discovered something important. He genuinely loved connecting with people.
Australia embraced him, and over time he completely embraced Australia in return.
He fell in love with the culture, the humour, the community spirit and the relaxed Australian way of life. In 2014 he proudly became an Australian citizen and now, almost twenty years later, Australia is home.
His quick wit, humour and compassionate outlook helped him connect with people from all walks of life, while his love for animals and nature only continued to grow stronger.
The Connection Never Left
Today, that same quiet connection Reza felt with dogs as a child continues through Pet Stays Melbourne, the dog boarding business he runs alongside Bark with Buster.
Dogs naturally gravitate toward him. Nervous dogs settle beside him. Energetic dogs calm down around him. Many sleep next to him through the night, finding comfort in his presence and calm energy.
That connection is now part of everyday life through Pet Stays Melbourne, where Reza cares for dogs with the same patience, calm energy and compassion that shaped his childhood love for animals.
Over the years, caring for dogs from all different backgrounds and personalities has only deepened his understanding of canine behaviour, trust and emotional connection.
Friends and family often joke that Reza behaves like the calm alpha of the group, naturally protective, nurturing and deeply connected to the dogs around him.
Today, that connection continues through Marvin, a 40 kilogram Staghound who unexpectedly became part of the family after being abandoned at Pet Stays Melbourne during the Covid period.
What began as a heartbreaking situation slowly became another reminder of the deep emotional bond dogs can form with humans when given safety, patience and love.
That compassion extends beyond animals too. Whether in Australia or travelling overseas, Reza has always felt strongly about helping people and animals less fortunate, especially those struggling on the streets.
For him, kindness has never been something reserved only for business. It is simply who he is.
The Values Behind Bark with Buster
Today, Bark with Buster is built on far more than natural dog treats.
It is built on compassion, connection and respect for animals.
Perhaps those early memories of watching hungry street dogs from the apartment balcony never truly left him.
The little boy who secretly fed bread to stray dogs became the man who now dreams of one day contributing to dog rescue and animal welfare on a much larger scale.
For Reza, dogs were never just pets.
They became teachers.
And every dog since Buster has reminded him why kindness, patience and trust matter so much.
And Buster was where it all began.
